What do we do?

Meetings

Meetings consist of getting together and discussing school and club business first. This may be discussing a fundraiser or a volunteering opportunity for community service hours. Our meetings usually run 30-45 minutes and once business is over, we usually share writings or spend time talking about possible ideas. This is our time to unwind.

Fundraisers

Members determine what our fundraisers are for, but our goal as a club is to have a great literary magazine to publish our students' works. Examples of fundraisers we have had in the past include:

* Cookie grams

* Chocolate Pop grams

* Pickle sales

Volunteer - Community Service

Assisting National English Honor Society.

Silver Ink works closely with National English Honor Society, including helping them with their community service activities.

Writing Assistance at local elementary schools

Silver Ink members have spent countless hours at a local elementary school, helping them with their writing skills in preparation for their STAAR exam. Having students help younger students demonstrates an understanding of the difficulty of the exam and it allows the younger students to see that passing the test can be done because their older peers have experienced it before and succeeded.

Helping Del Valle & Silver Ink

Within the organization, volunteerism is greatly appreciated. We usually need help with homecoming preparations, Poetry Night, and of course, many evening events that allow us to promote our organization to incoming freshmen, as well as to our fellow peers.

Writing Workshops

We usually hold writing workshops for our members and any students and faculty interested in joining us. These workshops are meant to help our students improve their writing skills, as well as hone in to details that may be missing in their writing. We have had poetry and prose writing workshops thanks to community organizations.

Teacher Led Workshops

The sponsor will occasionally lead workshops after meetings to help members find their voices and ideas.

Student-Led Workshops

The best teachers are our peers and there will be student led workshops to help inspire each other in our journey to wonderful writing.

NaNoWriMo

November is National Novel Writing Month. Silver Ink participates in this worldwide online event by setting a goal of 3,000 words and writing stories that are candidates for the literary magazine. We get pins for participating and online advice from authors around the country. This is a great month-long activity for students to collaborate and work on telling their stories.

More information can be found on the NaNoWriMo website.

Open Mic Night

Open Mic Night is a collaboration between Silver Ink, National English Honor Society, and DV Reads. This is the night in which Del Valle students and faculty share their words, music, and soul with the community. This is an annual event.

The Quest - Literary Magazine

Our end goal is to create a literary magazine that will display our students' creative work. This magazine has been published year after year and it contains poetry, prose, non-fiction essays, art, and photography. We strive to create a better magazine with each passing year.
